intro
Fine new EP from Koni Michi, the moniker of classically trained violinist Michi Wiancko, who merges toy instruments and computer generated structures and rhythms, with her fantastic violin playing
Trained violinist Michi Wiancko is responsible for the latest release on Shark Batter. Under the Kono Michi moniker, she releases home recordings that have nothing to do with her already established philharmonic career. The intriguing concept of Kono Michi includes a toy piano and toy glockenspiel, computer generated structures and rhythms, with her fantastic violin playing providing the melody line. Her slightly nasal vocals aren't, however,as as strong, Michi may need further vocal training here, as the mere concept of a graduate one-woman band will be worth the effort. Her lyrics are also riddled with clichés, and again, this stands in stark contrast to the excellent compositions and performance. On my favourite track 'Dark Eyes' the rudimentary yet digital rhythm recalls sloping middle-eastern music, whereas the violin appears to be of Balkan origin. It is as if the Danube might flow through Egypt. The last track 'In A Lake' has an excellent rolling touch to it, turning it into a loungy waltz. My only reason for mentioning words of criticism, is the fabulous music on this EP. In due time, Kono Michi will produce a classic album. Nonesuch Records should check their bank balance.
