intro
Welcome return to form on eighth album from ever-controversial hardcore rockers, Korn
Korn’s eighth studio is a welcome relief after their awful outing on 'MTV Unplugged', so awful even the Cure could not save it (Imagine 'Blind' in acoustic, get the picture). Their first effort without founding members David Silveria and Brian ‘Head’ Welch is pretty much a follow up to Korn’s last effort, the excellent but critically unappreciated 'See You on the Other Side', and is a step in the right direction for the band. The band again like their last efforts have opted to co-write with ‘The Matrix’, the US answer to Stock, Aitken and Waterman and to be fair make a pretty decent job of it. The band go for an synth-led industrial sound, more akin to Nine Inch Nails, which really adds need I more depth to the band’s down-tuned guitar sound that has made them famous. Recent single, 'Evolution', plays on the Devo theory that man is de-evolving rather evolving without the silly energy domes, quirkiness and moog synthesizers. Stand-out track for me is the schizophrenic 'Bitch We Got a Problem', fat bass, tortures vocals and heavy guitars as standard and an instant classic. Of course it would not be a Korn album without the epic emotional ending track 'I Will Protect You', featuring bagpipes, tortured vocals etc as standard. All in all, 'Untitled' or whatever its name is quite a decent effort and a welcome return for band once consigned the dung heap of nu-metal.
