Leeds group iLiKETRAiNS return with their first new material in nine months, having now signed to Beggars Banquet. ‘Spencer Perceval’ is a 9 and a half minute brooding piece, which builds on where ‘Terra Nova’, their last single, left off. Its starts off in slow fashion with a complete eerieness to it, as it should be being a tale sung from the mind of a murderer John Bellingham, whom murdered the then British Prime Minister Spencer Perceval in the Houses of Parliament in 1812. Loud, long moody guitars roll over, backed by Bunnymen style drums and a weird trumpet grace Dave Martin’s vocals like warm honey over warm toast. It is absolutely gorgeous, a song to get completely lost in, and in a live setting, totally spellbinding. ‘I Am Murdered’ is sung from the Prime Minister’s point of view. This is less dark in its colour, with eerie picked guitars flowing gently over the landscape. The vocal is almost whispered, with the PM talking in a touch of black humour about what he has been up to, not expecting his soon demise. The chorus has lovely flowing trumpets which swim perfectly into the grooves of this equally compelling track.
