intro
Innovative third single from thoughtful Leeds band iLiKETRAiNS, which takes its inspiration from Captain Scott's ill-fated expedition to the Antarctic
This is the 3rd single by iLiKETRAiNS and is being released on a limited edition 7" single, as seems to be back in fashion these days, but that's about the only thing iLiKETRAiNS have in common with other bands around on the scene at the moment. Musically, they are not following any trend, sticking with their own artistic integrity and writing about things that interest them. Lyrically they look to historical and biographical events that tend to be on the periphery of more major events, and often highlight failure or madness. 'Terra Nova' is inspired by Scott's expedition to the Antarctic. It starts slowly with sparse keyboards and bass evoking the bleak polar landscape and the impending failure of the mission, and builds up to a crescendo of layered guitars like the storm which signalled the end of the expedition and the death of Captain Oates. The B side 'Fram' continues the theme of Antarctic exploration as it is based on the story of Hjalmar Johansen, who was supposed to be a part of the Norwegian team that beat Scott to the Antarctic, but did not take part in the expedition. The sound is layered beautifully, and depicts the sadness and rejection that Johansen surely must have felt, whilst bringing to mind the desolation of the vast Antarctic landscape.
