intro
Airy sounding, but late night third album from the Zincs, the project of former Elevate and Sophia guitarist and now Chicago-based Englishman James Elkington
Zincs mainman James Elkington started his musical career in Britain with stints in Elevate and Sophia - both bands were noted for their moodiness. Elkington now resides in Chicago, but he’s brought the rainy days and fondness for lyrical wit from his native heath. The late night atmosphere of the Flaming Stars permeates Elkington’s latest album, 'Black Pompadour'. (The heavily reverbed twang of 'Burdensome Son' would sit easily on any of their albums). Elkington also has some of the deadpan vocal aplomb of Max Decharne. Elkington’s work has also drawn comparisons to artists like Eric Matthews and Richard Hawley. But instead of the lush, Roy Orbison-inspired sound of those artists’ work, Elkington draws on Chicago musicians like Joan of Arc sideman Nathaniel Braddock and noted songstress Edith Frost, her drummer James Toth and bassist-about-town Nick Macri (Euphone, Jeremy Enigk, Bobby Conn’s Glass Gypsies) for an airy, clean sound reminiscent of such outfits as Snailhouse and Julie Doiron.
