intro

Enjoyable, but unexceptional blues rock from long-serving boogie-loving Midwesterners, Five Horse Johnson

Five Horse Johnson is a boogie-loving Midwestern band which plays hairy music for hairy men and the tattooed women who love them.  There’s nothing new in guitarist Brad Coffin’s overdriven bluesy licks and major-chord riffs, in vocalist Eric Oblander’s growly vocals, bassist  Steve Smith and Drummer Mike Alonso solid rhythm, or songs about lovin’ em, leaving em’, losin’ and drinking and getting it on — the band owes a colossal musical debt to Raging Slab, and have the decency to admit it — but originally is hardly the point of FHJ’s irony-free blues rock. The band does try to stand out from the pack with the occasional oblique lyric, instead of laying things out with bland directness; its musical skills have also been honed by constant touring and several previous albums. Like those previous albums,'The Last Men On Earth' is a strong, if not outstanding effort; but also like those other albums, it’s like those albums — if you have one, you may not feel pressed to get another.
