I’d not heard anything from long-term Matinee artists, Melodie Group, before this single so I was very surprised. They don’t live up to their name. I was expecting some summer pop tunes, but what actually appears is something a lot more subtle and adventurous. They don’t sacrifice tunes entirely (of course not – this is on Matinee recordings after all!) but have made a record that is both quiet and relaxed. Consequently, it fails to make an immediate impression and is not the sort of song that I could hum all day. But that’s not what I always want from a record. More often I want something that enhances or reflects my mood and for that the Melodie Group are just perfect. After a few plays I began to notice a real atmosphere developing around the music. Although this is simply played and far from catchy I thoroughly enjoyed it. Matinee are frequently Pennyblackmusic’s most popular label, but the appeal of this will extend beyond its established fanbase to fans of the likes of Belle & Sebastian and even bands such as the Kings Of Convenience.
