The Music hit the big time after the Radio 1 DJ Steve Lamacq plugged them heavily on his evening show and their demo received lots of airplay on his slot. A media frenzy ensued and this 1000 copy release of their debut single now has an asking price over some 10-15 times its initial value. Despite having an average age of 17, and, being a guitar band who are young, they don't sound like Nirvana or a punk/grunge spinoff. The Music sounds more like the Stone Roses, or the Verve, and are melodic, fast-paced and psychedelic. From this one single, it's apparent that much of the fuss has come as much from The Music's sound as well as Lamacq's helping hand and their "young but talented" appeal. The real truth hits in when you listen to the B side, 'The Walls Get Thinner', which is an instrumental. The urgency of this track highlights their determination and proves what all the band's publicists have been saying - this is a band that sound like they are going to change things. Maybe if The Music had indeed taken the long road and walked it, their critics would have less ammo against them, but even with their sudden fame this band towers above wannabe rockstars everywhere as a real hope in a vast array of boring indie and aimless punk. Like this or not, and you'll probably love it, it's this is one of the most important records of the year.
