At 69, Bryan Ferry still has charisma and cool. From the moment he strode on stage at his gig in Oxford's New Theatre in dark suit, black shirt with no tie, the capacity audience were reminded why Ferry was once such an icon to so many. Supported by a superb 10-piece band, Bryan Ferry delivered a flawless 90 minutes plus set featuring many highlights from his four decades in music. There were songs from his new 'Avonmore' album plus some impressive renditions of compositions that weren't his own. Dylan's 'Don't Think Twice Its Alright' was especially memorable with a gentle piano accompaniment and the Jerome Kern classic 'Smoke Gets in Your Eyes' received a rapturous response. 'More Than This' was a delight too - delivered by Ferry from a seat at the keyboards. 'Take a Chance with Me' had the audience singing along as did 'Jealous Guy' - Ferry's poignant tribute to John Lennon - plus Roxy Music classics like 'Love is the Drug', 'Virginia Plain' and 'Do the Strand'. Inevitably, with such a big back catalogue, some Roxy favourites weren't performed - but the audience couldn't have been disappointed by their evening. This was a master of his craft, still on top form and totally in charge of everything he was delivering. Ferry also made a point of highlighting the great talents of his supporting musicians including three brilliant backing singers, his violin player, saxophonist and lead guitar - something that not all top performers bother to do.
