With album titles like "It's Hard to Find a Friend", and "The Only Reason I Feel Secure", one can quickly get a sense of where Seattle native David Bazan (a.k.a. Pedro the Lion) is coming from. His second full-length release "Winners never Quit", however, is less about his relationship with God than his other previous endeavours, and is also by far his most ambitious work to date. "Winners Never Quit" is heartbreakingly good. On first listen it appeals solely to any kind of indie-rock sensibilities you might have, and on further listen you become completely absorbed and involved in the stories of life's deceptions that it depicts. It is one of those albums in which you feel that every dysfunctional word uttered is about you. The mood and sound of each song is influenced by its subject matter-slow acoustics for songs about shame and sorrow, faster and more furious for songs about murder and betrayal. "Winners Never Quit" is an album about loss. It makes you feel like you're in pain all the time. You sit frozen for one song, and then want to trash all your photo albums the next. This is easily one of this year's best albums.
