intro
Sonic tapestry woven with virtuosity and vision from Liverpool-based composer and multi-instrumentalist Neil Campbell
Liverpool-based composer and multi-instrumentalist Neil Campbell blends contemporary classical, progressive rock, and jazz in his diverse output of solo guitar, ensemble, and choral music. He has released acclaimed albums with various projects and collaborated with artists including Jon Anderson (YES) and DJ Yousef. Notable works include 'Frankenstein', 'The Flood Trilogy' and 'The Great Escape.' His performances span the UK and Europe, often in unique venues, showcasing innovation through looping and layered compositions. So it is great to report that Campbell’s latest work is a masterclass in atmospheric, genre-spanning guitar music—infused with rich textures, emotional depth, and a cinematic sweep that reflects the influence of icons like Ennio Morricone, Nick Drake, Philip Glass, and Antonio Carlos Jobim. It is a fitting addition to his already impressive artistic CV. In fact, it may well be the finest achievement of his career to date, offering a compelling showcase of his artistry while drawing listeners into a dreamlike, immersive sonic landscape. Opening track 'The Wild Frontier' proudly channels Morricone, conjuring desert landscapes and widescreen drama with twanging guitars and evocative melodies that could slot easily into any spaghetti western. 'On the Other Hand' jump starts with Martin Barre-esque flair, spotlighting Campbell’s intricate fingerstyle playing and masterful control of tone and dynamics. This is an album steeped in generosity—generosity of mood, melody, and emotional resonance. Tracks like 'No Leaves Left' gently summon the ghost of Nick Drake, while 'One Evening in Palermo' transports the listener with its delicate, swooping guitar lines. Meanwhile, 'Beltane' mines a sense of English pastoral beauty reminiscent of mid-70s Jethro Tull, and 'Tributaries' offers a shimmering sonic landscape thanks to the expert production of Jon Lawton. Martin Smith’s flugelhorn on the title track is a late-night jazz delight—smoky, soulful, and effortlessly cool. The album closes with 'Second Hands', a stunning, emotive piece that distills everything Campbell does so well: understated virtuosity, melodic elegance, and heartfelt composition. Throughout 'The Turnaround,' Campbell’s guitar is both compass and guide. His #understated brilliance and compositional clarity make for a truly transporting experience. In collaboration with producers Lawton and Snape, he has crafted an album that feels timeless, comforting, and quietly revolutionary. For longtime admirers, this is a crowning achievement. For new listeners, 'The Turnaround'is a perfect introduction to a uniquely gifted artist.
