intro
Bright, breezy pop on commercial fourth album from Sabrina Carpenter
Sabrina Carpenter says she looked to her friend Taylor Swift for inspiration when thinking about her sixth album, “Short n' Sweet”. Sabrina, 25, was born in Quakertown, Bucks County, Pennsylvania just an hour's drive from Taylor's hometown of West Reading in the same state and she supported Taylor on the Eras tour in Latin America and Australia. She also works with Taylor's producer, Jack Antonoff and specialises in smart, lyrical songs about relationships and dating. But Sabrina is far more than a mini version of Taylor - as was affirmed by her own massive Summer hit ‘Espresso’. This was a song in breathless daytime disco style that playfully suggested Sabrina was such an exciting catch that she kept her lover awake at night like a shot of strong coffee! It topped the UK charts for seven weeks and has been equally successful in the USA and Australia, reaching over a billion streams on Spotify. ‘Short n' Sweet’ is an album that reaffirms Sabrina's star status. As the title suggests, the album is bright and breezy with 12 songs which fly by in 36 minutes. The styles include slinky R & B (‘Bed Chem’), guitar-pop (‘Taste’), acoustic folk (‘Slim Pickins’) and American soft-rock (‘Juno’). It is a clever, cohesive record and brilliantly produced by Jack Antonoff. Sabrina's lyrics can be acerbic and sometimes (on ‘Bed Chem’) rude! On ‘Dumb & Poetic’ she criticises a potential suitor for his phoney love of self-help books whilst the subject of ‘Slim Pickin’’ is truly hammered..... 'This boy doesn't even know the difference between “there”, “their” and “They are” ', she complains bitterly. Some say 2024 has been the year of female pithy pop – and “Short n' Sweet” from Sabrina Carpenter certainly adds to the fun!
