The latest album, her sixth, by Grammy-award-winning Nantucket-born singer-songwriter Meghan Trainor is a mix of genres, including emotive ballads and tuneful pop songs with a sprinkling of doo-wop. The follow-up to her 2022 ‘Takin’ It Back’, ‘Timeless’ reverberates to the key themes of good mental health and wellbeing, female empowerment, love and friendship. Songs to listen out for in this sixteen-track collection include: the opener and single ‘To the Moon’ with its driving bass, infectious beat and humorous video; retro-pop ‘Been Like This’, an exuberant duet with T-Pain, with its self-affirming lyrics: “’cause she’s cute and she’s classy/Thick, bold and sassy/She knows what she do when she moves…”; the lush ‘Crowded Room’, showcasing Trainor’s melodious vocals; sardonic ‘Whoops’ with its jocular take on a break-up; disco-style ‘Crushin’, featuring soul group Lawrence; upbeat, fun self-empowerment anthem ‘I Wanna Thank Me’, a catchy collaboration with Niecy Nash, with its body-positive message; ‘Love On Hold’ with its insinuating salsa tones and bouncy rap from T-Pain; R&B-flavoured dance-track ‘Rollin’, calling out sexist behaviour: “Another day, another man tryna mansplain somethin’ (hey)/I see his lips move, but they ain’t sayin’ nothin…/And when a guy goes hard, he busy/But when a girl pulls up, she bitchy”; and the closer, the title track and ballad on everlasting love: “ … we don’t know how long we’ve got/Here on this rock/But you and me, we’ll never stop/ You and I, baby, we’re timeless/Here tonight and after my final breath”. Uplifting, eclectic, ‘Timeless’ is a sparkling foretaste of Trainor’s forthcoming US tour in September
