Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter Bebel Gilberto, who divides her time between New York and Rio de Janeiro, has brought out a new record in homage to her late father Joao, one of the greatest innovators of bossa nova, who attained world-wide fame through his duet with his then wife Astrud on ‘The Girl From Ipanema’. ‘Joao,’ comprising songs either created or made famous by her late father, spans acoustic jazz as well as samba, casting a contemporary New York style on classic Brazilian song. Experimental, at times ethereal, it is an enthralling journey through a range of emotions and musical landscapes, highlighting Gilberto’s distinctive, mellifluous vocals and interpretative nous. Songs to listen out for in this eleven-track collection include: the opener, the catchy ‘Adeus America’; the nostalgic ’Eu Vim De Bahia’; the dramatic ‘E Preciso Perdoar’ with its innovative electronics and notable backing by Chico Brown on drums and Guilherme Monteiro on guitar and its accompanying video, which Gilberto said had been inspired by Sinead O’Connor’s ‘Nothing Compares 2 U’; the striking ’Undiu’, an original composition by her father, derived from his love of yoga and mantras; the idiosyncratic, fun ‘O Pata’ (‘the duck’) with its lively trombone; the melancholy ‘Caminhos Cruzados’ with its hypnotic beat; and the closing track, the emotive ‘Voce e Eu’. This is a sensitive and engrossing musical tribute to a much-loved father and icon by a talented, charismatic musician.
