intro
Exceptional guitar rock on second album from Wigan-based band The Lathums who sseem to be on the verge of major success
Is it just possible that the tide may be turning in the UK music market - away from the Tik-Tok-friendly pop and dance numbers which have been dominating the singles charts for a while? Is there a chance that a grassroots guitar band from Wigan – The Lathums – might achieve big success with their genuine musical ability and a sense of purpose that stretches beyond a desire for instant celebrity? This year has already seen The Courteeners from Manchester and The Reytons from Rochdale top the albums chart and The Lathums' debut album, ‘How Beautiful Life Can Be’ sold quite well back in 2021. All of these bands have a loyal regional following in the North West of England - but The Lathums have admirers further afield. Paul Weller, Louis Tomlinson and the BBC's Bob Harris are all fans and The Killers covered the title track of ‘How Beautiful Life Can Be’ on their recent tour. Hopefully, The Lathums' second album, ‘From Nothing To A Little Bit More’, out now, should consolidate the band's earlier achievements. Produced by Arctic Monkeys collaborator Jim Abiss, this is a strong record with singer Alex Moore charting the course of a doomed relationship against a background of chiming guitars. There is a bit of self-pity in places but any gloomy lyrics are cleverly offset by muscular riffs reminiscent of The Smiths or The Jam. There are doo-wop chords and finger snaps on .I Know’ plus an ambitious, eight-minute closing track in ‘Undeserving’. The Lathums are Wigan's biggest musical phenomenon since The Verve – and they could be on the brink of major success!
