intro
Confident and accomplished comeback album from Nashville-based musician and singer-songwriter Caitlin Rose
The Texas-born, Nashville-based singer-songwriter Caitlin Rose has brought out a new record, her first full-length album in almost ten years, its enigmatic title explained by Rose as “a place where a person can stand empowered by their own light rather than eviscerated by it”. Co-produced with Jordan Lehning, more poppy than her previous two album releases, ‘CAZIMI’ is an expansive collection with melodies complemented by Rose’s direct lyrics. Negotiating a kaleidoscope of states of mind, from regret and self-hatred to humour and joy, the songs circle around a central theme of love, carried by a talented array of musicians, most tracks written or co-written by Rose. Highlights of this cross-genre twelve-track collection include: the bittersweet opener ‘Carried Away’: “Everything in this world is make believe, baby”, setting the scene for the emotional landscape of the record; the jaunty, melodious ‘Modern Dancing’ with its memorable lines: “It’s a different face, but it’s always the same set of eyes”; the neo-traditional ‘Getting It Right’, a collaboration with Courtney Marie Andrews, exuding world-weariness; the sassy ‘Nobody’s Sweetheart’ with its layered vocals and folk-rock flourishes; the tense dissection of an unhealthy relationship in the Gothic lead single and video ‘Black Obsidian’; and the closer, the rhythmic ‘Only Lies’. A long time in the making, 'CAZIMI' marks a confident, accomplished comeback by Caitlin Rose.
