As the daughter of the late Indian music maestro Ravi Shankar, Norah Jones has long been acclaimed as a musical genius in her own right. But now she has released her first ever Christmas album - which is a cheerful affair! The Texan-raised jazz-singing Jones was inspired to write some seasonal songs after listening to James Brown's 'Funky Christmas' as well as the 1957 'Elvis' Christmas Album'. At one point in 'I Dream Of Christmas' Jones lends her own languid vocals to Elvis' ballad 'Blue Christmas' - though the main highlights of her new album come with her own compositions. 'Christmas Calling (Jolly Jones)' explores the desire for winter companionship and 'It's Only Christmas Once A Year' is a post-pandemic number which showcases Jones's intricate piano work. With backing from brass, flute and cello Jones happily reverts to what she calls her “jazz nerd” roots on some classy covers. She brings a fresh and warm-hearted glow to 'White Christmas' and to Chuck Berry's 'Run Rudolph Run'. There's also a mellow version of the high-pitched novelty hit by virtual band Alvin And The Chipmunks, 'Christmas Don't Be Late'! It is good to hear Norah Jones deploying her vast talents on a straightforward feel-good Christmas album.....and 'I Dream Of Christmas' should win her many new friends!
