intro
Enjoyable new four CD Box set released to mark the 30th anniversary of Meatllica's infamous black album which combines a remastered version of the original album with covers of its tracks by a total of 53 artists.
When it first emerged in 1991, Metallica's self-titled fifth album introduced a new generation to heavy rock. The Los Angeles-based band's 'Black Album' (as it came to be known) combined the churning riffs of frontman James Hetfield and guitarist Kirk Hammett with softer ballads. Now, to mark the 30th anniversary of this milestone album, the band have remastered the original record – and also curated a mammoth tribute that sees all the album's 12 tracks covered by a total of 53 different acts – including country singers, punks, rappers, classical virtuosos and DJs! With all proceeds going to charities, this is a colossal homage – and, at more than four hours of listening, a rather long one! The original big singles prove especially popular with the guest artists. 'Enter Sandman' appears six times. And there are twelve versions of 'Nothing Else Matters' including as a ballad (Miley Cyrus and Elton John), a touching indie-pop lament (Phoebe Bridgers) and a classical instrumental piece (Igor Levit). With the same songs appearing multiple times, 'The Metallica Blacklist' is a record to dip in and out of, rather than just wade right through. But there is something for everybody here - and it is a fitting and original way to mark the anniversary of the original.
