intro
Over-polished but eclectic debut album from the McKenzie FIX, the new project of acclaimed Edinburgh-based singer-songwriter Ewan McKenzie
Following a few full length offerings as frontman of Edinburgh formed combo Emporium, including 'Silver Brainwaves' which received support from the Scottish Arts Council, musician-songwriter Ewan McKenzie embarks on his new project The McKenzie FIX and releases a single ‘Alone ‘at the same time. McKenzie has an eclectic collection of songs and releases in his repertoire. His music is kaleidoscopic and diverse - he is continuously finding new ways to express himself through a broad sonic palette. Following two critically acclaimed, self-released songs 'Alone' and 'The Shining', The McKenzie FIX have launched this, their first album 'Pandora’s Box' through new record label Crystal Seven Records. ‘Alone’ was co-written with lyricist Kay Russell. All in all, the twelve tracks that make up this eclectic outing, explore a surreal mixture of Gothic dream imagery with a distinctly 80's pop flair. There is a ghostly condition to the entirety of this record and the songs blend together into a vast array of colours and themes. There is no doubt McKenzie has a true ear for melody which is apparent throughout. There has been a lot of careful work done on this so it is with a heavy heart for me to say that for me it is possibly too well worked. Everything has been done to the utmost of perfection, and sometimes that level of precision can be too precise. I don’t want to take anything away from what is essentially a very good first stab, but it is for me a little too clean.
