First-rate 80's-influenced new wave/post-punk on debut album from Los Angeles group Lunch Lady
Think of the Pretenders and Delta 5 and a more rocked out Bangles, and you have the lovely sound of Los Angeles post-punk outfit Lunch Lady. Reminiscent of the 80's new wave punk sound a lot of us were brought up pn, Lunch Lady, which consists of Rachel Birke (vocals), Juan Valasquez (guitar), Victor Herrera (bass) and Robert Wolfe (drums). formed two years ago. Exploring Birke's easy and moody vocals, this debut album, 'Angel', has songs about yearning and longing but also reflects on troubled times and buried hearts. It reminds me of Blondie's 'Parallel Lines' because it explores different avenues and sounds while still keeping to its new wave traditions. Written mainly by Rachel Birke, much of it finds her reflecting on her childhood and painful times. The sound is tight. Velasquez's guitar resonates along like a demented wasp whilst in perfect harmony with the bassline of Herrera and Wolfe's beat. 'Preacher Man' is, however, an oddity which sees a stripped down Lunch Lady going in an indie-popcorn direction, before they instantly blast back into their waspish guitar sound again with the infectious 'Young Bride'. The impressive 'Dream Date' is an instrumental, and the last track 'Deeper' brings the album to a fine close. This should put Lunch Lady on the map, and get them noticed. It is a good start and welcome return for the new wave/post-punk sound.
