intro
Bleak soundtrack to documentary about artist Penny Slinger from Psychological Strategy Board that explores the depths of electronic music
As if a brand new sound was to evolve, 'Out of the Shadows' is very much indebted to the works of Throbbing Gristle, Chris & Cosey and other works of art and music from the late 1970s and the grim 1980s. Penny Slinger built the centrepiece to the 1977 photo romance 'An Exorcism' which in hindsight recalls David Lynch's debut film 'Eraserhead' - both in terms of sound and as well as decaying imagery. It features breezy, vague electronics and dark, brooding soundscapes that flirt with mesmerising loose ends. As visual artists tend to overreact given their portrayal, admirers of Penny Slinger's work thought of her as someone truly exceptional. The calm and even the music on 'Out of the Shadows' nonetheless reminds us in sound of how mediocre those times were. Grim, dark and most of the time meaningless to future generations, the post-industrial age only shows that times ahead and times before were much better. The utter boredom in 'Penny Slinger: Out of the Shadows', however, is something to be reckoned with. Testament to those decades, Psychological Strategy Board deliver a fine job. 'Out of the Shadows' portrays two decades. Decades which those who lived through theme do not keep really fond memories of. The Psychological Strategy Board captures in sound the most frightening of those naughty nineties.
