Camera - Emotional Detox

Late 1970's swirls and sounds are evoked on hammering little tunes like the opening 'Gizmo' from Germany's Neue Welle History of the late 1970s. Melting the wee best bits from prog rock and Kraftwerk-like electronics, Camera incorporate these together to churn out an autobahn of sound of their own. Their discipline set aside on 'Emotional Detox', Camera perform their crafty, best Kraftwerk but also allow themselves sidesteps - meandering, fancy free footwork, like tapping their toes on the keyboards, merely to try out what sound effect that would generate. The great pleasure I found on this album lies in its joy of experiment limited by discipline. 'Emotional Detox' showcases a seamless ride through decades of adventurous electronic music incorporated together in dear old Germany. Quite hazardous at times, such as on 'Himmelhilf' - which must translate as 'Heavens Above', I suppose - tension builds up next on 'Cosm' which is a perfect example of how Camera try to move on from krautrock, and yet also perfect the 'old' krautrock style. The next track, 'Pacific One', adds a US West Coast touch to the autobahn sound and the album takes a turn towards the dreamy. Perhaps supposed to get the detox finished, the album dares to get you on the wrong foot. The marvellous 'Super8' most certainly will. 'Emotional Detox' comes to a close with the most appropriate 'Feuerwerk'. The best tracks though are the ones in the middle between start and finish where Camera don't feel the need to explain and simply enjoy their freedom. 'Emotional Detox' quite does its job, and is somewhat of a liberating experience.
