intro
Stunningly inventive new recording between production duo Nightports and classically-trained musician Matthew Bourne which using pianos as source material breaks new ground on the Leaf Label.
This is the first in a series of collaborative albums on the Leaf Label, and aims to give the selected artist an opportunity to experiment and construct new music restricted only by the sounds that the musician constructs from the chosen source. Established and enhanced by producers Adam Martin and Mark Slater and featuring Matthew Bourne, this offering is nothing short of remarkable. The recordings produced here are all sourced from pianos found at Bresbrode Pianos in Leeds and sounds recorded at Bourne’s home studio. Everything from a vintage 1907 Bechstein to a modern Toyama Grand has been recorded, sampled and sequenced to great musical effect. Opening with 'Exit' we are introduced to a combination of piano and rhythmic patterns that immediately intrigue. Not knowing quite what to expect, it is surprising just how inventive and “modern” this cut is. The beats are embellished by the piano riff and provide a stunning introduction to the album. 'Window', however, is a subtle and gentle composition bringing to mind Nils Frahm or Max Richter. 'Nightports', however, is its own master. Nervy percussive textures intermingle with expressive and experimental pianos, all seamlessly gathered together to provide a really engaging album. It is fair to say that 'Nightports' could be considered unsettling in places but the concept is thoroughly modern, positive and exciting. This is new music that breaks down barriers between classical, jazz and avant-garde. 'This Trip' is a beautiful, ambient piece that precedes 'Annie', an outstanding slice of broken beats and melody that are processed together to amazing effect. The 'Nightports' team triumphantly blend and manipulate the source material with such dexterity that the result is not only groundbreaking but wholly satisfying. A prime example of the new music that is emerging in the UK.
