intro

Fine debut single from Tom Lockwood, the ex-frontman of Stoke-based band, Electroshock Therapy

Electroshock Therapy only lasted a few years and I saw less than a full gig by them one August afternoon at the Leicester Firebug about two years ago, but they blew me away. They looked like Love or the Seeds in 1966 and sounded just as magical. Sadly I never got to see them again, as they changed line up and cancelled their last show in Leicester. Frontman Tom Lockett has gone on to a solo career, and it's just as good. He is a good-looking chap with the looks of Roger McGuinn or even Bryan Maclean in their heyday. This debut single follows on from the mere three releases still available from Electroshock THerapy, and is a beautiful start. 'Feeling Bad' has an element of the young pre-fame Bob Dylan, opening with the twang of acoustic guitar and mouth organ. There is some fine psychedelic keyboards in it which give it a lift. While it has been done before, it's not been done this gracefully for a long time. Count me in as a fan, for sure. The more one listens to it the catchier in gets. It remains in the head long after its three odd minutes finish. 'I May Be Down But I'm Looking Up', the B-side, again captures the true spirit of Greenwich Village of New York of the early 60s. It has the swagger of Woody Guthrie, and is backed by the pure hedonism of the early Beat Poets fighting for a change in society. Both tracks have been recorded in fabulous black and white mono.
