intro
Subtle second album which strikes alll the right chords from Brave Timbers, the instrumental project of former Last Harbour and Lanterns on the Lake violinist and multi-instrumentalist Sarah Kemp who has collaborated on it with pianist Andrew Scrogham
In the guise of Brave Timbers, 'Hope' marks Sarah Kemp's second album five years well after her debut. Une multi-instrumentaliste par excellence, Sarah Kemp is helped out by pianist Andrew Scrogham, and the two of them together find each other in the Garden of Eden as it were. There is evidence of a chemistry between them on almost all of the tracks. Their joy in playing prevents 'Hope' from ever becoming a milestone. The compositions occasionally tend towards the predictable, but Brave Timbers' approach to music comes with plenty of charm. Think of the Penguin Cafe Orchestra or Leo Kottke melted in a smooth fashion with jingle jangle avant-garde . There is plenty of intrigue in 'Hope', which was very much to my taste, I was tantalized listening to it.
