intro
Despite their sound being hard to pin down, Copenhagen-based group Blaue Blume’s eclectic debut LP proves certainly worth investigating
Hailing from Copenhagen, Blaue Blume aren’t the easiest band to pigeon hole as they seem somewhat out of step with any current trends or scenes. This, of course, is a good thing. The reason they are so hard to pin down is because of singer Jonas Smith’s incredible vocals, a beguiling mix of Antony Hegarty and Alison Moyet doing operatic somersaults. In the same way that, when fronting the Sugarcubes, Bjork often used her voice as an additional instrument, Smith does here. Behind him his band serve up a kind of claustrophobic dream-pop that sometimes hints at the Cure without ever fully committing. Of the songs, 'Epoch' is a brooding centre-piece, while 'Thinking of Roxy' is a more traditional pop song that sadly is not a tribute to the now defunct Bury nightclub I spent some of my formative years frequenting. 'Sky' owes a slight debt to Black and 'On New Year’s Eve' opens with the kind of guitar work that made those early Smiths' records such a joy, but in both cases the songs unfold into something that could only be Blaue Blume. There is an inscription on the album cover that poetically reads “You kissed my ear and whispered something and threw yourself into the flames – and I quickly followed ‘cause you were mine.” This kind of sums up this intriguing record as it takes the ingredients from the band’s debut EP ('Beau & Lorette') and creates something even bolder. It’s certainly different and I think I like it.
