intro
Melodic and sensitive Americana on new album from Scandinavian singer-songwriter, Kristoffer Bolander
It is about time to think of the North-European counterpart term to Americana. Scandinaviana? Kristoffer Bolander's voice somewhat sounds like Will Oldham's without the perhaps misperceived drinking habit. Pure and clean, close to an immaculate falsetto, Bolander's vocals lead through a set of touchingly affectionate songs, many graced with a (very) subtle twang. Rank and file under singer-songwriter, although this doesn't do justice to the band, organ, harpsichord and all those who broadened the sound. In all of its modesty, 'I Forgive Nothing' - a reference to 'There is No One What Will Take Care of You' by the Palace Brothers - ultimately shows its complexion. Rosy warm cheeks, like when you would have had those, unwrapping Christmas presents in the snow. 'Starlight' is the prime example of where Santa Claus sings like Al Green, backed by the Flying Burrito Brothers. The dark side of the album kicks off on 'In Vain' with a wall of guitar noise, which disappears to only resurface on the melodramatic latter half of the penultimate song 'Outlaws'. 'Scale', the closing song, sums up many of the album's qualities; warm, organic keyboard sounds, gentle hand-clapping with a keen and great sense for melody.
