intro
Fabulous third album from Welsh new wave band Normil Hawaiians which, having been lost for over three decades, proves to be a timely rediscovery
In the Autumn of 1980, Normil Hawaiians' first John Peel Session turned out to be their only one. Idiosyncratic to the maximum, Normil Hawaiians were shoved down to the ground after the Stonehenge riots. Their third album never saw the day of light, peacefully lying on the shelves. Saved from the vaults, 'Return of the Ranters' stands testament to the grim era of when hippy punks were chased into the Welsh Mountains and were forced to shut up. Compatriots in style to, for example, Yeah Yeah No, Normil Hawaiians merge echoes of Bogshed and long foregone masters of lazy, post new wave twang. Their fragility unevoked and their sincerity unchallenged, Normil Hawaiians display another side to the 1980s and one most likely unknown before. Sounding still vital after all these years, 'Return of the Ranters' should be welcomed with praise.
