intro
Tantalizing posthumous album from the vaults of late electronic pioneer and early Tangerine Dream member Conrad Schnitzler, who has had his music updated and revitalized by fellow German musician Pyrolator
Some forty years ago when I first heard Tangerine Dream, I thought they were lame, unaware of Conrad Schnitzler's early contributions to that group. His radical approach to noises and sound recordings only received recognition much later. Jens Strüver, the Treasurer of Schnitzler's legacy invited Pyrolator, of John Peel darlings Der Plan, to create from core material the third in the 'Con' series. In his completely black studio, Conrad, who died in 2011, recorded thousands of tapes, cassettes and CDRs, working usually without music label contracts. Pyrolator, who was born Kurt Dahlke, is a favourite of mine. His quirky 'Neue Welle'-era music, both as a solo artist and with Der Plan, however, proves that if you think that 'Germans don't have any sense of humour' you're ever so wrong. It still cheers me up today. Pyrolator sounds like he is having fun as he twists the knobs. Not terribly eccentric or weird, 'Con-Struct' sounds both funky and funny. It is impossible to tell, of course, what the original recordings were like, but this posthumous collaboration has resulted in a crispy, fresh and often tantalizing blend of rough experiments and buzzing Pyrolator beats. Erupting as oddball house tunes, some fit the dance floor and many shall tease your imagination.
