King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard are a new seven piece band from Australia. They have released records in other territories, but ‘I’m in Your Mind Fuzz’, which has come out on Heavenly is their debut UK album. The album's sleeve is in DayGlo, and ‘I'm in Your Mind Fuzz’ does exactly what its title says it does and brilliantly so, as the first four songs could be one song and melt perfectly into one another. ‘I'm in Your Mind’ opens the collection, and is a fuzzed-up, Krautrock-based number with a distorted vocal and catchy guitar that haunts and sucks its listener in. A psychedelic infusion of hot bass, frazzled guitar and hard-hit drums, this is the sort of track that you want a band to work up to. It sounds upon it as if the late 1960s are still with us. ‘Cellophane’ is their debut 7 inch, and, as addictive as alcohol on a thirsty night, is mind blowing. ‘I'm in Your Mind Fuzz’ is an out and about fuzzed- up jam that is reminiscent of ‘Join the Dots’ by fellow label mates, Toy. ‘Empty’ has a slower pace, recalling the early Cure, and is backed by a Jethro Tull flute. ‘Again’ has dreamy vocals from singer Stu Mackenzie, almost in a flower power style way. ‘Am I in Heaven?’ is a sing-a-long acoustic based tune, as off its head lyrically as Syd Barrett, before it reverses itself into garage rock and moves up a lot of gears. ‘Slow Jam’ is short and exactly as it says it is. ‘Satan Speeds Up’ is a seductive, 1970’s-styled love song. The guitar on ‘Her and I (Slow Jam 2)’ is consistently reminiscent of Robby Krieger's slow guitar harmonies which always made the Doors so special. A fine UK debut album.
