intro
Superb lo-fi and stripped-down blues on breathtaking third album from Seattle-based trio, Lonesome Shack
They say don’t judge a book by it’s cover, but that's not true and the same also aplies to records. The cover of Lonesome Shack’s third album 'More Primitive' shows a bearded, tattooed chap in a metal bathtub outside in some sort of American country setting. It totally encapsulates what lies beyond the sleeve. ‘More Primitive’ is perfect from start to finish. Nestled somewhere between blues, country, bluegrass and throwing in a little bit of boogie, this really is the genuine article. It has an upbeat feel to it, but when you start listening to the lyrics, it is not a happy life front man Ben Todd's singing about, but it still sounds great. ‘Old Dream’ ‘Chomping at the Noose’, ‘Die Alone’, far from being anthems to slam tequila shots to, are the soundtrack to late night, regretful whiskey binges, and they sound fantastic. There are shades of all the classics, but this is by no means a rip off or some sort of white boy wannabe band. For the most part ‘More Primitive’ is a stripped-back affair with gentle drums/perucssion, bass and guitar, and it’s this simplicity which makes the album as powerful as it is. There’s nothing there that doesn’t need to be here. It sounds like it could have been recorded in one room in one take. Go get your blues. This is magnificent.
