Anthony Strutt finds band-of-the-moment Pulled Apart by Horses predictable and clichéd at a show at The Musician in Leicester
The Musician has never looked quite so full, and, with so much of the young audience trying to look so old, there are nearly as many beards in here as there are people. The Wytches open with their second gig in Leicester in a few months. They they could have probably sold out the venue by themselves. A much hyped London-based three piece, they have recently signed to Heavenly, and have their debut album, which is not out until the festival season of August, already available on pre-order. Reminiscent in part of a pre-fame Nirvana, they are energetic and fun, and quickly get the audience on their side with their guitar rock which has a hint of cool 60's psychedelia hidden in their guitar parts if you listen hard enough. Grunge has a new voice and on this occasion it hasn't come from America. Pulled Apart by Horses only play for an hour. At the front of the stage is a barrier, which is normally never there. The crowd go instantly mad for this Leeds four-piece, but they frankly do nothing new with their brand of nu metal which is tainted with a touch of the old style. Within a few songs guitarist James Brown's shirt is off, there is moshing a plenty, we get a few new songs and are told that old cliché that this is the best gig of the tour. The band close the set with the Stooges' 'I Wanna Be Your Dog' which makes the last hour worth travelling for but once in a lifetime is enough for me.
