intro
First-rate double CD compilation from the Small Faces and the Faces' Ronnie Lane's often overlooked solo career
It is sometimes forgotten that one of the best-loved bands of the Sixties were the Small Faces - and the Faces were amongst the really outstanding live acts of the Seventies. At the heart of both was Ronnie Lane as song-writer and bass player. Ronnie Lane's key role was, however sometimes rather overlooked, even at the time - perhaps not surprisingly when he was on stage with front men with the talent (and egos) of Steve Marriott and Rod Stewart. When Lane opted to walk away to showcase his own songs with Slim Chance, the Faces never fully recovered from his departure and the loss of a master songsmith who had brought a uniquely sensitive folk-country, almost rustic dimension, making the band far more than just another booz and drug-fuelled, over-sexed rock outfit. This new compilation album 'Ooh La La: An Island Harvest' brings alive the magic of Ronnie Lane's early solo career, with great songs played by a free spirit, lovingly laced with mandolins, violins, squeeze boxes and guitars and with band members including Gallagher & Lyle. The favourite singles are all here – like 'The Poacher', 'How Come' and 'Don't Try and Change My Mind' along with live performances of Faces classics 'Debris' as well as 'Flags and Banners'. This two-CD set is a reminder of what a great song-writer Ronnie Lane was and its release is timely, too, marking the 40th anniversary of 'The Passing Show' tour.
