intro

Atmospheric and evocative mini-album from Australian instrumentalists, Sleepmakeswaves

Every now and then you come across a band that you instantly fall in love with, and Sleepmakeswaves are one of those bands. The ‘instrumentalsits’ from Australia first burst out of their local scene in 2008, and have since gone on to tour the world and make a number of EPs and albums including 2011’s ARIA award nominated ‘And So We Destroyed Everything’. ‘In Today Already Walks Tomorrow’ is just about perfect in every way. ‘I Will Write Peace On Your Wings and You Will Fly Over The World’ is a real attention grabber with its bursts of noise and chunky bass lines, and yet it morphs into something just about as beautiful as the title would suggest. It’s not surprising to learn they’ve played with likes of Boris, Karnivool and have also graced SXSW with their presence. Fans of This Will Destroy You and 65daysofstatic would be drawn towards Sleepmakeswaves with their atmospheric yet driven sounds. Think early and stripped back 65daysofstatic, but only stripped back in the sense that the amount of instruments and layers is kept to a minimum rather than stripped back of ideas. For the most par there are guitars, bass and drums with little or no synths and keyboards to fill up the space. Their songs have an incredible patience to them. Everything has its own space and time to develop and does so perfectly, and everything has its place and is used to its full benefit; ‘Exits To Nowhere’ and ‘It’s Dark, It’s Cold, It’s Winter’ are both fine examples of this. The band exude a warmth throughout, most notably on ‘One Day You Will Teach Me to Let Go of My Fears’ which has string arrangements that are reminiscent of Explosions In The Sky. The final track 'What We Cannot Speak Of, Must Be Passed Over in Silence' begins like a lullaby and ends in a dramatic crescendo, which brings the album to a close perfectly. For a record with no words it manages to say so much, and holds absolutely no filler whatsoever. I cannot recommend this band highly enough.
