Impassioned soul on excellent reissue of 1973 live concert album from the legendary Wilson Pickett
Bolstered by a surging horn section and a tight rhythmic band, ‘Wilson Pickett: Live in Japan’ finds the soul singer legend in fine form on this reissue of a 1973 concert, originally released as a double live vinyl album. The recording is stinging soul from the start. A powerhouse rendition of the classic ‘Proud Mary’ witnesses one of the famed greats of Southern Soul rocking it in Japan with his signature wail. ‘People Make the World’ is rich rhythm and blues- heartfelt and soothing. This concert album finds Pickett demonstrating an impressive vocal range and register, driving the backing band with his propulsive delivery- including nimble guitar leads, rollicking organ lines and tasteful drum fills. ‘I’m In Love’ showcases gut bucket vocals that hit you straight on, complemented by the first rate horn section. Pickett’s signature hit ‘In the Midnight Hour’ is perhaps his most famed turn, delivered here with passion: “I’m going to wait till the midnight hour… That’s when my love begins to shine.” There is a raging soul rendition of ‘Fire and Water’, originally by the rock band Free, and a beautiful, easy ‘I Found a Love’ that grows steadily with gaining momentum. Also present is a touching rendition of the Association classic ‘Never My Love’. Additionally performed here by Pickett is the everlasting soul music classic ‘Mustang Sally’ as well as ‘Land of 1000 Dances’. Next to Otis Redding, the late Wilson Pickett is one of the most recognizable purveyors of Southern Soul music, part of the rhythm and blues pantheon. On ‘Don’t Knock My Love’ the horn section gets to pumping again with Pickett leading the band in a rousing full on soul experience, backed by steady bass and drums. All in all, ‘Wilson Pickett: Live in Japan’ is an impassioned satisfying set, taking his audience to the soul summit.
