intro
Melodic and poppy, but genre-less latest album from Nigerian singer-songwriter and cult star, Keziah Jones
'Captain Rugged', which is the moniker Keziah Jones has given for himself in troubled Nigerian times, is a type of cartoon hero and saviour. This ex-pat afro-Nigerian music, which was recorded over several sessions in London, Paris and New York, is graced with an urgent vibe, and is further proof of futile ranking by origin, style and genre. Keziah Jones doesn't have the talent to write a number one hit song, and instead is best considered a band leader, producer-musician and a protagonist member from an ethnic minority. On 'Utopia' he sings, "I am not very employable" whilst instead he sums up the easy sway of Al Jarreau combined with the heft of Nigerian heroes who went before him. Melodic, poppy and mostly relaxed takes on Afro-Funk define this genre-crossing album.
