intro
Irresistible hardcore on stunning debut album from hip Montreal-based trio, Pypy
One word comes to mind upon hearing a band described as 'Superdope, Psych-Punk from Montreal' and that word is 'Hipster'. I've been to Montreal, so believe me. Although this word often comes with negative connotations, in Pypy's case it doesn’t. Instead it refers to those bands that are impossibly thin, scruffy yet incredibly stylish and effortlessly cool. I found myself thinking throughout 'Pagan Day' that many of the riffs could quite easily sit on an overly produced, radio-friendly rock album. Luckily for us they were not wasted on this, and instead these French Canadians are sweat- soaked, lo-fi and energetic. A lot of other bands spring to mind when listening through this album. There are the bass lines of 'New York' and 'Daffodils', both of which have come straight from the Stranglers’ repertoire, and the sleazy, disco swagger of the Hives on 'Ya Ya Ya' and 'Molly'. The opening title track had me thinking Pypy could be the bratty younger siblings of Death From Above 1979 . Throughout the entire album I was also reminded of a more positive and possibly less clean-living version of Minor Threat in the youthful energy that seems to just pulsate throughout ‘Pagan Day’. 'Daffodils' secretes sexual energy with its pace changes and drums and bass beginnings. 'Too Much Cocaine' brings to the fold some solid drumming and great use of guitar effects to string you out even further and send you on a trip back to the most chaotic times of your life. To finish up with another reference point I'd say that Pypy sound like CSS, if they'd all knuckled down and learned how to play their instruments properly rather than relying on that one guy with the moustache. Irresistible thoughout.
