intro
Compelling sixth album from Texan-based singer-songwriter Micah P. Hinson, which he recorded, after being involved in a car crash , with Scottish group the Twilight Sad and Spanish act the Aquattro String Quartet
Micah P. Hinson was born in Memphis, Tennessee, but moved to Texas in his teens and there discovered his early interest in music and hooked up with a Texan collective, the Earlies. He has released six albums prior to this, all of which are absolutely killer. This release on the French label Talitres label very nearly never happened after Micah was involved in an horrific car crash whilst touring in Spain and temporarily lost the power of both hands. Whilst anxiously waiting on word, Micah poured over some demos which had been recorded prior to the accident, and called upon friends around the world including Texan T. Nicholas Phelps and Scottish group the Twilight Sad to help him out. ‘How Are You, Just A Dream’ opens album with a full-on wall of guitars and drums and a rasping vocal. The follow-up ‘On the Way Home (To Abilene)’ is a country-soaked ballad about his beloved Texas. There are shades of Cash, Nelson, even Elvis Costello or a punk Buddy Holly on this album. The writing throughout is sublime, and he is backed with an astonishing array of local Spanish musicians in the shape of the Aquattro String Quartet. ‘I Ain't Moving’ is a slow piano ballad possibly about his frustrations after the accident. The Tannerin (Electro-Theremin) is evident on ‘The Same Old Shit’, and there is some good ol’ country hoedown on ‘There is Only One Name’. ‘A Million Light Year’’ should conclude the album, but there is a 'ghost track' in the shape of twelve minute bonus ‘The Crosshair’. This is a compelling listen, and once again Micah.P. has produced a great record with a little help from his friends.
