intro
Intense but captivating second album from London-based post-rockers, One Unique Signal
The second album from London-based post-rockers One Unique Signal finds them on fine form, but not getting any quieter. The band spend most of their time when not touring under their own name as the backing band of the Telescopes. ‘Luna Attractions’ opens the album, which, as hard in sound as the Pixies, instantly hits its listener over the head. The guitars intertwine over a patchwork of wah wah, while Byron Jackson’s vocals make a late arrival. The whole track menaces in a way that would make the Sisters of Mercy proud. ‘A Beginning’ rolls over like a vintage Telescopes number. It crawls along in chunky darkness, breathing fear in the air that it consumes. ‘The Underside’ combines the blacker, bleaker side of the early Cure, with the more sleazy side of the Jesus and Mary Chain. On ‘Amplitude’ One Unique Signal retell the Velvet Underground’s ‘The Gift’. Their storytelling crosses a very bleak and dark landscape. ‘Seed’ is very experimental, and somewhat disjointed, like the guitars are going through a loop. It is an ambient shoegaze number, and both very loud and full-on. ‘Failure’ has a rolling flow, sounding like Echo & The Bunnymen's ‘Zimbo (All My Colours)’ but with more grit underneath. ‘One, Three, Five’ is reminiscent of Mogwai, and mostly instrumental. There are vocals, but they are muffled and come over like an additional instrument. ‘A Ribbon Snake’ is a perfect mix of dark wave grooves. ‘Celebration and Absence’ have a deranged, abrasive sound. The title track ends the album in bleak gloom, and has big bass and drums that set the scene for the darkness that follows. A dark, but wonderful album.
