intro
Initially unappealing but ultimately entertaining new EP from Bristol-born but now London-based soul producer and DJ, EVM128
Another mixed bag offering originating from the South Bank of the River Thames, the 'Naked Truth' EP goes from very mellow modern soul to jiggy upfront R&B. A handkerchief dismissive touch desperately missing in its perspective, the EP kicks off with two takes featuring Daiva's nasal and monotonous vocals. The rhythm patterns building up in the background though prove far superior to the oblique vocals. The real treats are saved for the last. The B-Side goes tiptoe square dancing on a merge of tame dubstep and deep groove digging. First the elegant playfulness of 'Beyond' comes to pave the way, ease the mind and ears, and then this is followed by the honey-dripping 'Dibbi Dibbi' and, finally, we're on a roll. It is a shame about the first two tracks. The latter two on this EP, however, make up for it in grand Nu Soul style. A surprise move for the Studio Rockers label perhaps. Nah rootsy, nah reggae, and instead very sophisticated.
