Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin - Fly by Wire
Label: Polyvinyl Records
Format: CD

Affable summery pop on fourth album from Missouri-based indie guitar outfit, Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin

It’s taken me years to warm to Missouri’s Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin. My first dip into their summery brand of American indie Rock was 2008’s underwhelming ‘Pershing’ album. It struck me then as it still does today that Weezer did it better and with more guitars for their bucks. Yet unlike with Weezer time has been kind to SSLYBY. Their melodies have become stronger instead of stretched, and the guitar playing is intricately delicate when needs be. Also the buzzy guitars which are still low in the mix get to shine every now and again, which is always welcome. Single ‘Nightwater Girlfriend’ is a case in point. The grunge light fuzz shines through the breezy pop melodies, and by the second verse some mathy playing injects a classy hook that many bands just wouldn’t have bothered with. As any band approaches their 15th year together as a unit you would expect them to get comfortable within their skin and whilst that is a true statement here with SSLYB. It’s not a negative one. The only track that adds nothing to the table here is the wishy washy ‘Ms. Dot’ which falls foul to an unfortunate track sequencing issue, where it has to follow the masterful ‘Lucky Young’ which thanks to its lush double tracked vocals becomes an album highlight. If you refuse to let the winter blues kick in, just yet then ‘Fly By Wire’ is the album for you
