intro
Risk-taking third album from Robinson, the project of much acclaimed singer-songwriter Andy Robinson
Andy Robinson has become quite the sought-after singer songwriter in a short amount of time, with a CV which includes radio play and frequent festival appearances in the UK and the US. Just five years ago, he came out with his debut single 'First Time,' which led to the boisterous, highly original and politically incorrect 'England's Bleeding' a year later. His second album, 'Beneath the Ballroom' included a variety of dance and musical offerings: a touch of tango, a smattering of Dixieland and a searing R & B tribute. His current album, 'Willamina Machine' is of a more experimental nature. Robinson brings back artist John M. Robinson ('England's Bleeding') for a spirited cover drawing, but he sticks closely to his own muse when designing the tales, which sometimes have deceptive titles. 'Home,' for example, is about the break-up of a family as told to their bewildered son, There is a delightful horn solo on '100 Miles Per Hour.' The David Kahne mixed 'If You See Her' is a study in pathos, 'Lady In White' and 'Show me a Sign' are decorated with Tom Waits' style accordion. 'We Don't Work It's Over' is a haunting and gripping confessional, while 'Waiting On Cinderella' is another example of exhilarating pop even though the tearful story belies the carefree beat. Robinson's very revealing collection begins with 'Superlove', which brims over with seductive guitar and persuasive percussion. 'Willamina Machine' secures Robinson's position as not only a prolific songwriter, but one whose risk-taking nature has deepened our respect for pop music.
