intro
Epic and cinematic post rock on imaginative debut album from Sydney-based instrumental group, Sleepmakeswaves
Sleepmakeswaves describe themselves as a 'melodic instrumental rock quartet' from Sydney. This, their debut album, has already been nominated for an ARIA award which is the Australian equivalent of a Grammy. It is not hard to see why. This isn't ambient or background music by any stretch of the imagination. Instead the wonderfully named tracks from 'to you they are birds, to me they are voices in the forest' to the heavy and angsty title track feel huge, sweeping and cinematic in their scope. 'After the storm is silence' a voice whispers to introduce the epic 11 minutes of 'a gaze blank and pitiless as the sun'. The song has distinct movements building to a crescendo of rolling stormy drums before moving to the promised silence. The band comprises guitarists Jonathan Khor and Otto Wicks-Green, drummer Tim Adderley and bassist Alex Wilson, and what they have created with this album is a very complex and intricately woven soundscape. The album will be available as a deluxe 2 CD edition with the additional bonus disc entitled '...and they remixed everything' featuring remixes by 65daysofstatic. There are shades of 65days in the original album so this choice makes perfect sense. There will also be a double gatefold vinyl edition available in sepia or white (350 copies of each) and 300 copies on black vinyl. The vinyl comes with the album on CD, a poster, a download coupon for the remixes. Stop me if you are getting dizzy. This is unashamedly an album for lovers of album not singles bands. There is no one hook, no catchy verse/chorus/verse formula being followed. This won't fade into the back ground at dinner parties. This is one to play and pay attention too. It will reward you handsomely for doing so.
