intro
Enjoyable latest album from Portland, Oregon-based electro artist E*Rock, which recorded on vintage synthesisers is the soundtrack to a computer game from his childhood
In a sense reconstructing days from his childhood, E*Rock wrote the score to a computer game he played on the family's PC, which came without music and graphics but challenged his imagination with text on a black screen instead. On the Prophet 600 and Juno 60 synthesizers from that era, E*Rock recreates the feeble electronic sounds from when computer hardware still had very limited functions. My Nakamichi started to malfunction years ago, but if you still have a cassette deck running get 'The Great Underground Empire' on cassette as well. It is definitely cooler than Instagram. The album collects together mysterious melodies, where a childish joy in adventure filters through. E*Rock's journey through "the ruins of an ancient empire lying far underground" is that of a junior explorer, reporting in music. All tracks are titled by a place or a space. They sum up an exciting little trip. In the realm of youth, the melody lines are as fresh as innocence.
