intro

Distinctive and fresh-sounding psychedelia on debut album from UK group, Big Dwarf

There’s no shortage of psychedelic revivalists stalking the music scene, but Big Dwarf keeps its head above the crowd by reassembling everything from 1970's prog to modern travellers like Spiritualized into their own distinct melange on ‘Towards Abstraction...’ With all but one of the songs topping the nine-minute mark there’s plenty of room to blend in squelching synths, flighty flute and popping electronics besides the usual bass-drums-guitar. ‘Cage(d)’ rolls in with some Hawkwind-style fuzz rhythms, but the early impression ends fast with a touch of funk, some glistening guitar parts, reminiscent of Robert Fripp’s work on ‘Exposure’, and dandified vocals that will probably remind some listeners of Britpop’s heyday. (Fans of obscurities like the Cosmic Gardeners will also detect a similar vibe.) There is some more space-guitar wigouts on the synth-fuelled ‘Kill ‘em (In Their Sleep)’, while a Chrome-style guitar buzz jump-starts ‘Fear of Flying’. Mellow Candle vocalist Alison O’Donnell also appears on the final track, ‘Inner Space’, lending some chanteuse sophistication to the drifting interstellar soundtrack. Big Dwarf really deserves a round of applause for bringing something fresh to a crowded field.
