intro
Inventive debut album from Seattle-based psychedelic folk pop outfit, Rose Windows
In recent years Sup Pop have hand-picked themselves an incredible and varied roster ranging from the likes of Jaill and Avi Buffalo to Pissed Jeans and Metz. The latest to join are Seattle-based (of course) psychedelic folkies Rose Windows. As soon as you fire up the record you can tell that Rabia Shaheen Qazi’s deliciously smokey vocals are going to take hold of you as they lead you through the varying high and lows of the ‘The Sun Dogs’ nine tracks. She’s backed up by bassist Richie Rekowow. His vocals are very 70's Neil Young in flavour and sit perfectly in the mix, sometimes achingly distant. The combination of the two, and the record's purposely trippy compliment of slower numbers make this a perfect Sunday morning album. ‘The Sun Sogs II: Coda’,’ Heavenly Days’ and ‘Walking with a Woman’ all recall Karen Dalton and Jefferson Airplane at their best. They keep the female vocal upfront yet still allow the music to wash over the songs. The vocal melodies are strong ,and the playing is always confident as if to see “we mean it, man”. Even though the running time on ‘This Shroud’ is a touch under ten minutes long at no point does it feel bloated or even a little flabby. In fact Rose Windows have created an album that sits perfectly amongst the current crop of Sup Pop bands, always inventive and always with one foot in the past, a welcome addition indeed.

Posthumous second album from just disbanded Seattle-based sextet Rose Windows, which finds them shifting from their early psychedelic influences towards a melodic pop/folk sound |
