intro
Infectious and enormously enjoyable combination of classic rock influences on debut album from Diamond Rugs, which includes members of Deer Tick, Black Lips, Los Lobos, Dead Confederate and Six Finger Satellite
Diamond Rugs is a sort of leftfield supergroup, featuring members of Deer Tick, Black Lips, Los Lobos, Dead Confederate and Six Finger Satellite. Between them, the respective members have collaborated with artists such as Elvis Costello, Paul Simon and Tom Waits, and the experience has obviously rubbed off on them. Particularly Elvis Costello, whose influence is very evident on many tracks on the band’s self-titled debut, which also manages to replicate the Replacements’ barroom swagger. Mid-period Bob Dylan is also in there somewhere, and good ol’-fashioned rock ‘n’ roll. It’s a sort of muddy stew of various rock influences, both classic and new wave (which is essentially classic as well, these days). So we have the Modern Lovers-ish ‘Hightail’, the soul-style horns of ‘Call Girl Blues’ (like Paul Westerberg singing Costello), the fuzzy blues-rock/country hybrid ‘Country Mile’ and the almost-glam stomp of ‘100 Sheets’. It’s not treading over any ground that hasn’t been well-trodden before, but the songs are consistently good and more importantly, the band members sound like they’re having fun, and it’s infectious.
