intro
Evocative combination of post rock and post folk on second album from Powerdove, the project of Minnesota-based musician Annie Lewandowski
On her second solo album of post rock and post folk, which she merges together with minimal acoustics, Annie Lewandowski fronts up in a way that makes you want to shy off. She's done all the rounds, played with a member of Deerhoof and a ton of other things. 'Do You Burn?' is, however, deeply evocative, equally inviting as well as determinedly disturbing. Her unearthly vocal exercises zigzag over fragmented pieces of quasi post-folk music. But that's not to say, she's got nothing to tell. 'Do You Burn?' is a proud 13 track, 31 minute album, offering a wealth of offbeat ideas for composition. A touch of minimalistic pop music sensitivity remains, yet her eerie folk antics sooner lead into her own little anthems, such as the spooky title track off the album. The jangling angelics of the vocals leave the listener wanting to believe that Powerdove is all about clearspoken British folk pop music, though evidently it is not. Recorded in Britain, and moulded by the landscape, this album captures 13 recordings of freeform jazzy folkpop, very much with an Americana touch of esoterics. The track in the middle is called 'California' - which may explain for the album's extravagant sense of looseness.
