intro
Fabulous third album from Lancaster-based noise rock duo and married couple, the Lovely Eggs
'Wildlife' is the third album from married couple Holly Ross and David Blackwell, who may take a break from music for a while as they have both become parents recently. It is the follow up to 2011's 'Cob Dominos', which they toured constantly for a year and a half. 'Wildlife' delivers eighteen songs, which last for as little eight seconds while 'The Castle', the closing number, is longest of all at four minutes twelve seconds. 'Allergies', which opens the album, is a track that is total fun, a song to make you jump up and down and which is guaranteed to put a silly smile on your face. 'Don't Patent That Shoe' is a mere fifty-three seconds long, but switches in its short duration from calm to Riot Grrrl. 'The Undertone' again lasts just under a minute, and is so fast that you have to run alongside of it just to keep up with it. 'I Just Want Someone to Fall in Love with' is a love song for today's or yesterday's youth, and is set over a payphone before the joys of the internet or smartphones. It is essential as the Smiths back in their day. 'Please Let Me Come Mooch Round Your House' is mushy in sound, and a tale of Northern life in a Northern town. 'David's Turn' is the eight second track, and a spoken word piece. 'Scooter's Got Itchy' is a fifty second piece of White Stripes thrash. 'Green Beans' returns to the band's favourite topic of food, and is a lo-fi garage punk number, which sounds as if it has been played on the wrong speed. 'Food' was a previous 7 inch single, again on their favourite subject, and is the sort of thrashy pop number that turns grown men into the type of twee indie kids that like to jump up and down and throw their over-priced lagers into the air. 'Cigarettes' is a counting song, backed by a beat that sounds like solo Nico. 'I Am' is heavy on the drums and raw on the guitar, while 'Wildlife' is another short counting song. 'Lee Mellon's Teeth' is a grungy number that is reminiscent of Sonic Youth. 'Idiot Check' is a pre-gig equipment check twenty-three seconds of fun.'Just Won't Do It' is very twee to start and in the style of Moe Tucker, before it turns into a Riot Grrrl number of a thousand volts. 'William Tell' is slow but with a primitive underflow to it. 'We Really Got It' is a quality piece of lo-fi. 'The Castle' ends the album, and, a quality number, has all the energy of a young Nirvana, while Holly's vocals have a real attitude. A fabulous record.
