intro
Indifferent and over-long eleventh album from Sheffield-based electronic duo, Autechre
The duo's eleventh album is a 2CD or 4LP set that at best, and for perhaps only thirty minutes of its lengthy runing time, is mildly interesting. One of the few challenging moments is a part of 'Nodezsh'. yet even that mood rapidly develops into a rut. 'Exai' doesn't even annoy, and the album's indifference has resulted in stereotypical art gallery soundscapes. 'Exai' does have a structure. The first 45 minutes are amazingly dull. Then this seventeen track time consumption features a couple of instances of genuine imagination, albeit just chunks in a lukewarm watery soup. The scattered sparks, cracks, drumloops and bleeps go on and off and only build a blanket of sound. Autechre never set out to please, but on 'Exai' the duo fails to intrigue or to annoy. 'Exai' isn't even depressing. Played in a supermarket it wouldn't lead to a revolt. File in musique concrète.
